I’m so tired of hearing the argument that if someone wants to get a gun then they are going to get it no matter what laws we put in place. I can’t understand how some people allow this argument to go uncontested when it would be considered ridiculous in other situations. Should we not lock our homes when we are away because if a thief wants to get in then they will? Should we not have a law against drunk driving because if someone decides to drink and drive then they will? Should we not have security at airports and police departments around this country because if someone wants to do something bad then they are going to do it?
We can’t stop all crimes but that doesn’t mean we just throw up our hands and say, “nothing can be done”. We try to make laws that improve security to make our world safer, while at the same time trying to protect our individual rights. We need to keep working to improve this delicate balance. We don’t want to live in a country so extremely focused on security that it prohibits us from leaving our homes because we can’t be trusted to be good. On the other hand, we don’t want to live in a country so free of laws that it turns a blind eye to any wrongdoing.
